Filipino Tattoo

Traditional Filipino tattoo art carries a history deeply connected to the ancient Austronesian cultures of the Pacific. While Filipino tattooing is not strictly Polynesian, it shares ancestral roots with many Polynesian traditions through the great oceanic migrations of the ancient world.

Among the best known Filipino tattoo traditions are the Batok tattoos of the Kalinga people and the warrior tattoos of the Visayan “Pintados.” These tattoos symbolized courage, protection, status, ancestry, spirituality, and personal achievements. Traditionally, tattoos were earned and carried deep meaning within the community.

Filipino tattoo designs are often geometric, rhythmic, and strongly connected to nature and tribal symbolism. Although visually distinct from Polynesian tattooing, there are cultural and symbolic similarities that reveal their shared Austronesian heritage.

At Manu Tattoo, Filipino-inspired tattoos are approached with great respect for their indigenous origins and meanings. Every piece is individually designed freehand, creating a personal tattoo that honors both tradition and the story of the wearer.
